Yom HaShoah

Guest Speaker Jack Cynamon

We are delighted that Jack Cynamon (born Jacques Cynamon) will join us for Yom HaShoah.

Please join us to hear Jack speak about his life and experiences as a hidden child of the Holocaust. Our evening will finish with a Memorial Service.

Jack Cynamon (born Jacques Cynamon) is the son of Icko Cynamon and Rosie Cynamon, nee Zederbaum. In 1942 the family went into hiding. Whilst Jacques’ parents stayed in hiding Jacques was taken under the wing of Father Joseph Andre, a Belgian priest who organised the rescue of hundreds of Belgian Jewish children. Jacques was initially hidden in Namur, Belgium and then Serville, France. During the Battle of the Bulge, Father Andre evacuated the children under his protection back to Brussels. After the war Jack and his mother were reunited. Unfortunately his father perished in the Holocaust.

Yellow Candle Project

Sha’arei Tsedek is proudly supporting The Yellow Candle Project, managed by Maccabi GB.

This project is a practical and informal educational tool to remember Jewish Holocaust victims on Yom HaShoah.

Each candle is accompanied by a small card with the name of a person who perished during the Holocaust; lit in their memory, the candle allows you to commemorate Yom HaShoah within your home. The Yellow Candle also includes two dwarf sunflower seeds for your empty Yellow Candle tin, to plant a seed for the future, to help remember the past.

Yellow Candles will be available to collect from the synagogue foyer from Friday 19 until Tuesday 7 May.
